Bowls: South East digs deep at state challenge

REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVES: South East bowlers Jodi Kotz (Keith), Heather Richards (Port MacDonnell), Di Murch (Bordertown), Judith Grosvenor (Port MacDonnell), Jenny Trengove (Keith), Cathy Healy (Naracoorte), Marj Richardson (Keith), Leanne Hentschke (Mount Gambier) and Belinda Pepper (Bordertown) represented the South Eastern region at the recent Bowls SA Prestige Medley.

BOWLS South Australia’s most prestigious event of the year was held at the Moonta and Ardrossan Bowling Clubs last weekend in hot bowling conditions.

The Prestige Medley, which consists of 12 players contesting fours, triples and pairs is divided into two pools, sees the state’s best bowlers go head-to-head.

Played in a round robin format, this decides the top two teams who will go on to play the top finishers in the other pool in a grand final and consolation final.

In the men’s competition, the South Eastern region team finished in fifth place in pool one, which saw it miss out on the chance to play finals.

Darryl Stopp and Geoff Hams had the best result for the men, as they recorded three wins and two losses in the pairs.

They were followed by Eric Pitt, Neil Watts, David Lack and Gordon Brown, who competed in the fours to win two of their five matches.

In the triples Adam Wilson, Rod Gibbs and Iain Campbell won one of their games, while drawing another and losing three.

It was a closer affair for the South East women, as they narrowly missed out on the consolation final, finishing in third place in pool two.

Port MacDonnell’s Heather Richards and Bordertown’s Di Murch excelled in the pairs to win four of their five games and finish with 19 shots up.

Keith’s Marj Richardson, Naracoorte’s Cathy Healy and Mount Gambier’s Leanne Hentschke also had a solid carnival, with three wins and two losses for the event.

However, in the fours the competition proved too strong, as Jodi Kotz, Port MacDonnell’s Judith Grosvenor, Belinda Pepper and Jenny Trengove were only able to win one of their five matches.

In the end it was Metro West which claimed the men’s title, after defeating Metro North 46-37 in the final, while Yorke Peninsula defeated Eyre Peninsula 52-42 to take out third place.

The women’s competition saw Metro East emerge as the victor, with a 47-37 win over the Eastern region, with Yorke Peninsula once again rounding out the podium after a 44-37 victory against North Eastern.
