Athletics: Mount holds interhouse athletics carnival

WINNERS: Team Gambier acting vice captain Lachie Jones, captain Shaun Lock, captain Isabel Redemski and vice captain Lateasha Bruhn celebrate their team’s success in the athletics carnival.

LACES were tied and sports clothes in the plenty at Mount Gambier High School for the recent interhouse athletics carnival.

After being defeated by team Lake for the PM Cutbush Shield at the swimming carnival earlier this year, Gambier went on to win the Ian Gould Athletics Carnival Shield for the third year in a row.

The team effort led by captains Isabel Redemski and Shaun Lock showed everyone present what hard work and determination can achieve.

Similarly to 2017, Kaylee Whitehead (Gambier) achieved three new individual records, battering the previous results in open girls high jump, triple jump and hurdles.

Not to be outdone, Gui Ros-Smith (Mount) also set three new records in the under 14 boys hurdles, triple jump and long jump.

In a very close decision, Gui won the Craig Elliott Perpetual Award for the most outstanding individual performance of the carnival.

His new record in the triple jump also beat a 31 year old Mount Gambier High School record by a whopping 39cm.

Claiming the first place title, Gambier finished the day with 1895 points, followed closely behind by Lake with 1757, Mount with 1324.7 and Tower with 1098.4.

In week eight, students from Mount Gambier High School will compete at Marist Park for the annual SESSSA Athletics Carnival where they hope to recapture the shied after being narrowly defeated in 2017.

The athletics team will also compete in the SSSSA Athletics Carnival in Adelaide.
