Hockey: Young guns earn state squad cap

STATE CAP: West Hockey Club’s Cody Lewis will represent South Australian Under 18 side in the National Hockey Championships in Launceston.

SEVERAL Lower South East Hockey Association players are gearing up for the upcoming Under 15 and Under 18 national championships to be held in Launceston and Wollongong both this month and in April.

The championships bring together the best junior hockey players in Australia and the Lower South East will be well represented with a total of 11 current or former players representing South Australia.

Redbacks Hockey Club’s Zara Blackwell will take to the field as part of the Under 15 Girls side in Wollongong, along with former Strikers club member Lucy Sharman.

The Under 15 Boys will also travel to Wollongong, with West’s Aiden Cameron donning the state colours for the second time, after making his debut in the Under 13’s last year.

Meanwhile, the Under 18 sides will travel across Bass Strait to Launceston this weekend.

The girls team is loaded with Lower South East talent with Cody Lewis, Charlotte Foote, Maddi Clark and Georgia Clark – all of the West Hockey Club – continuing their impressive careers at representative level, along with former Naracoorte player Hattie Shand.

The Under 18 Boys squad Redbacks players Toby Maddern and Jaylob Lobley, along with former Redback Finn Johnson.
