Motorsport: Gibbs powers to New Zealand victory

CONSISTENT: Kirk Gibbs finds the right line during Round 1 of the New Zealand Motocross Nationals where he finished fourth, third, second for a third overall at Taranaki Motorcycle Club on Sunday.
UNSTOPPABLE: Kirk Gibbs went one, three, one in his races on Sunday to claim the overall victory in Round 2 of the New Zealand Motocross Championship.

KIRK Gibbs continues to prove he is ready to return to the winner’s list in the 2018 Australian MX series, after an overall victory in Round 2 of the New Zealand Motocross Championship at Rotorua Motorcycle Club on Sunday.

The former Mount Gambier rider finished one, three, one in his three motos to claim the top step of the podium in the MX1 class.

Gibbs qualified third, almost two seconds behind current number-one plate holder Cody Cooper.

However, he found speed when it really counted.

The 29-year-old shot out of the gate to claim the hole-shot and greeted the chequered flag in first place in race one.

Race two was tougher for the KTM rider.

The top six riders were on the pace and their positions did not change from start to finish.

Gibbs was third out of the gate and remained there from start to finish.

In the final race of the day Gibbs put together a flawless run and held first position for the full nine laps to greet the chequered flag ahead of the remainder of the field.

The impressive results handed Gibbs the overall after a solid day of racing.

He finished ahead of Cooper and Kayne Lamont.

Gibbs took to social media to share his excitement.

“One, three, one for first overall,” he said on Instagram.

“Solid day at the office.”

Gibbs will now prepare for Round 3 on March 11 at Hawkes Bay Motorcycle Club.
