Archery: Freeman sets indoor benchmark

ACCURATE: With all the arrows scored Liam Stevens and Cooper Ferguson step in to remove the tightly bunched arrows belonging to themselves and the other two archers on their target.

INDOOR and outdoor archery was on the Blue Lake Archers’ schedule last week with good attendance noted at both.

A twin round of Australian 25 metre indoor rounds was on the menu Friday night followed on Sunday afternoon with a three distance WA 60/900 outdoor round.

Six archers competed at the indoor venue, each using an individual 60 cm target face at 25 metres.

Good performances were noted right from the first scored arrows, with a pair of perfect 60-point scores recorded by Paul Freeman and Graham Lock to open their ledgers for the night.

Ben Kilsby recorded two perfects during the rounds and produced the best off-the-bow scores for both rounds, with a consistent 291 from a possible 300 in each.

The first round went easily to Freeman, who led Phil Tremelling home by nine points, with both archers shattering the benchmark in the process.

Round two was a little tamer as all but Kilsby dropped in their off-the-bow scores.

The final adjusted point spread across the six archers was just 16 points, Freeman again held on for the win as Kilsby leapt up the adjusted finishing order to grab second place in a tie-breaking count-back with Tremelling.

The wind was kind to the archers on Sunday and light rain right on start time quickly cleared.

A large influx of beginner archers were looked after by Kilsby on the practice range, allowing six archers to compete on the main range in a WA 60/900.

Harris had no outdoor archery equipment available and chose to improvise, pressing his indoor bow into service with some older outdoor arrows.

While not expecting to do anything other than participate with the temporary set up, Harris was pleasantly surprised to score and all-gold end during the 50 metre section of the event.

Off-the-bow scoring was quickly dominated by Lock, taking full advantage of Kilsby’s absence from the competition.

Tremelling continued his accuracy from the indoor events, quietly building a solid score.

Len Bayley likewise was recording good scores and he and Tremelling carded scores above their benchmarks for the round.

In the final stages of the day Garry Jacques made a late charge, scoring 59 points from a possible 60, the best single end score for the day.

Tremelling won the day by 10 points from Bayley.
