Baseball: Tigers retain top spot

Tigers 7 d Federal 2

TIGERS retained its place on top of the Mount Gambier and District Baseball League ladder this round as it claimed a 7-2 victory over Federal.

The first score for Tigers came in the top of the second inning after Steve Frost and Joe Sims both walked, with Frost scoring on Brayden Morton’s infield out and Sims finding home on a wild pitch from starter Wade Chant.

Federal replied in the same inning, with Chant doubling to left-field and scoring on Gavin Smith’s single before the inning was shut down.

In the third, Tigers added two more runs to the board after a triple to right-field from Brodie Foster and a double to right-field from Dyllan Lane.

Lane’s hit saw Foster home, which was followed by a single to left-field from Jesse Foster.

Lane then scored on Steve Frost’s infield fielder’s choice.

The pitching of Federal starter, Wade Chant, went awry in the top of the fifth when he pitched three consecutive walks to Brodie Foster, Dyllan Lane and Jesse Foster and a hit batter to Steve

Frost, before another base on ball, this time to Joe Sims.

This drop in form conceded three runs for the inning, two from wild pitches and the third from a passed ball.

Federal added one more to its scoreline in the bottom of the seventh when Gavin Smith doubled to left-field and scored on Clay Carpenter’s infield out, which left the team with a 2-7 run deficit.

The pitching for the match saw Federal’s Wade Chant and Alex Reppin pick up 10 strikeouts and give up seven hits, while Tigers’ Tyler Horrigan and Brayden Morton picked up five strikeouts and conceded six safe hits.

South Indians 4 d Central 3

IN the second Division 1 game for the day, Central shot out to a three-run lead in the top of the first inning to put pressure on the South Indians’ defence from the start.

Doubles to Kyall McClean and Nathan Meinck and a single to Dylan Chuck resulted in McClean scoring on Meinck’s hit, who subsequently scored on Chuck’s hit.

Koby Chant doubled to right-field scoring Chuck before the inning was wrapped up.

In the bottom of the second Indians’ Bruce Morale walked and scored on Travis Lockwood’s infield out, while Steve Isaccson found himself on base from a fielder’s choice eventually scoring on a muffed fly ball by Central left-fielder Lachie Tilley.

The game-levelling run was scored in South’s sixth inning, when consecutive single base hits to Bruce Morale and Steve Isaccson was followed by Travis Lockwood getting to first from an error at second base, leaving the bases loaded.

Alex Lewis picked a walk scoring Morale for the team’s third run of the game before the inning folded.

With the game going to the 10th inning, Central failed to put a runner on base.

This gave South the opportunity it needed to take home the win.

Jesse Balshaw was able to get on base from an error, but was eventually out at home on a force play.

Dean Hamilton was hit by Central pitcher Dylan Chuck and made the walk to first.

He then scored on a force play at the home plate after an error from Central’s catcher Kyall McClean, which saw the Indians with their game-winning run.

Two of South’s runs for the game were due to opposition mistakes, with Central making a huge eight errors for the game.

South pitcher Dean Hamilton picked up eight strikeouts and gave up eight hits, while Central pitchers Koby Chant and Dylan Chuck picked up three strikeouts, only giving up three safe hits, but also gave up six base on ball and two hit batters.
