Golf: Trio share win

PAR is probably not the most popular form of golf, but it remains a great test of patience and steadiness.

Tony Geddes, Darren Harding and Paul Griffiths showed both of these attributes as they shared round-of-the-day honours at the Attamurra Golf Course on the weekend, all posting five-up.

The calm conditions, excellent course presentation and a large field of 113 players meant there were going to be some good scores posted.

The quartet of Haydn Dow, Peter Jones, Neil Quirk and Barry Brook all carded four-up.

A Grade bound Harding won the B Grade voucher over Brook and Geddes claimed the C Grade voucher over Griffiths.

In D Grade Dow, on four-up, took first place over Chris Patterson on two-up, while in A Grade David McGregor’s three-up was good enough, with Peter Waters second on two-up.

Players square or better will win a ball, except for the unlucky Jake Dempsey, who missed out on count-back.

On the plus side of the ledger were Travis Younghusband, Thomas Madigan, Russell Lewis, David Anderson, Mick Gill, Kevin Lennon, Kent Comely, Gary McCormack, Ian Ritter, Nick Moretti, Parker Smith, Michael Cutting, Barry Kuhl, Stephen Gray, Joe Clements, Lyndsay Copeman and John Sandery.

Birdie-twos were claimed by 14 players, including Wayne Elliot, Bob Dalgarno, Rob McIntyre, Peter Crow, Darren Bilney, Leigh McCracken, Peter Berkefeld, Judson Wheatley and Dempsey.

Bilney put it closest on 16 and McIntyre claimed shot-of-the-day honours on the eighth.

Women’s Par

IT was a smaller than usual field this week for the women, with some down in Adelaide to watch the Australian Women’s Open.

However, Lois Harvey was a worthy winner on Saturday, finishing one-up, ahead of Jade Delaney on square.

Julie Robinson rounded out the placings by count-back from Helen McIntyre, with both players posting one-down.

Mary Kentish took the nearest-the-pin on the 16th hole, while overall winner Harvey also claimed shot-of-the-day on the eighth.

Thursday Stableford

ANOTHER excellent field of 87 players had to deal with a sprinkling of rain in otherwise ideal golfing weather for Thursday’s stableford round.

Greg Smyth and Phil Bliss enjoyed the conditions more than most, both posting an impressive 44 points, with Smyth taking first place on count-back.

They were four clear of Peter Lock and Peter Miller who carded 40 points apiece.

Right behind them was David Turnbull, Garry McCormack, Ross Bond, Peter Waters and Bob Johnson, who all posted 39.

Players required 37 points to claim a ball, with winners including Mathew Dixon, Richard Gosling, Brian Ashby, Gordon Bignell, Paul Griffiths, Patrick O’Donnell, Wayne Sampson, Peter Buckingham and Brian Norman.

Winston Prowse claimed the pro-shot on 16 while Ross Bond claimed the shot-of-the-day on the eighth and one of only two par 3 birdies all day.
