Bowls: Port MacDonnell rolled at home

Division 1

Mount Gambier Red 75/16 d Port MacDonnell 61/0

THE Division 1 Open Pennant season continued on Saturday, with Port MacDonnell suffering a loss on its home greens to Mount Gambier Red.

Barb Milstead, Peter Bruhn, Heather Richards and Marcus Pietersma played Rebecca Gruar, Terry Bruhn, Brad Errock and Tony Renzi.

With Port MacDonnell leading until the 12th end, the score was level on the 13th, 15th, 17th, 21st and 24th ends.

On the final end, the Mount Gambier team scored a one, which saw it with a 20-19 victory, in what was a close-fought win.

On the second rink, Greg Fisher, Ron Cox, Bill Richards and Adam Wilson played Tom Radley, Gary McIntyre, Greg Hocking and Tony Bowditch.

This was another close match, with scores level at 17-all on the 20th end, but Mount Gambier came home strong to take the win 25-19.

On the third rink Wally Tarca, Judy Grosvenor, David Gould and Chris Richards took on the might of John Reppin, Bryan Vorwerk, Peter Reppin and Gary Carpenter.

Mount Gambier scored a six on the first end, followed by a three, which saw the hosts playing catch up.

Port MacDonnell scored the next four ends to be two shots behind, but a five to Mount Gambier on the eighth end saw the margin extended once again.

From there the Bay was unable to overcome the deficit, finishing the match with a 23-30 loss to the Mount Gambier rink.

Division 2

Port MacDonnell 93/16 d Mount Gambier RSL Red 71/0

THE Division 2 team had more luck than its Division 1 teammates when it travelled to Mount Gambier RSL to play the Red team.

With wins on all three rinks, the Bay returned home with the overall honours for the day.

Bob Hutchesson and his team of Rod Sutton, Barrie Schmidt and Bart Lethlean played RSL Red’s Paul Griff, Graeme Smith, Graham Dent and skipper Ian Moulden.

Both leaders bowled well throughout the match, backed up by their teammates.

The Port MacDonnell team was able to secure the lead from the ninth end, holding it until the end for a 32-19 shot victory.

Bruce Bain, Don Forbes, Reg Fisher and Kel Butler played Simon Attiwell, Graham Crowder, Ron Edlington and Wayne Lesutko, where Port MacDonnell scored the first six ends to lead 12- 0.

On the eighth end the RSL team scored seven shots and on the 10th they were ahead by one.

The game was a close affair from there on, until the Bay secured a two-shot lead on the 21st end, which it held for an eventual 33-28 shot win.

Following the trend, Roma Henderson, Robin Bilney, Kevin Henderson and Joy Bilney had another close game when they took on Ian Colby, David Anderson, Bob Milligan and Noel Miller.

Despite the visitors having the better of their hosts, the 22nd saw the scores level.

However, Port MacDonnell was able to edge one shot ahead on the 23rd end, before regrouping and finishing the game with a 28-24 win.

Division 3

Mount Gambier RSL Red 95/16 d Port MacDonnell 50/0

THE Division 3 Port MacDonnell cohort also made the trip to play the Mount Gambier RSL Red team.

This saw the team unable to win a rink, as their hosts claimed the honours for the round.

Jim Williams, Reg Gurney, Ben Tilley and skip Jennie Tilley took on Kevin Mott, Fleur Roachock, Gary Fox and Tony Freeman.

The RSL team came out scoring well with Port MacDonnell down 1-13 after the seventh end.

The Bay was able to score on some ends, but it was still trailing 8-21 after the 16th.

Not giving up, the side continued to fight back and on the 24th end were one shot up after scoring a six.

However, it was unable to claim the final end and the RSL won 26-25.

There was no such comebacks on the other two rinks for the day.

Port MacDonnell’s Darryl Sims, Geoff Ward, Danny Gaut and Peter Rutherford bowled against Phillip Wilson, Brenton Wittwer, Merna Whitehead and Albert McIntyre.

After a slow start the closest margin saw the Bay down 12-18 after the 16th.

With the RSL scoring a six to once again extend its lead, it continued to out-bowl the guests for an eventual 34-14 triumph.

On the third rink, Lyn Vanderley, Victor Perryman, Des Meyers and Lance Fisher went head-to-head with Tom Preece, Roy Mongomery, John Maher and Robert White.

The RSL team scored freely to be ahead 24-5 after 14 ends, before continuing this form to defeat Port MacDonnell 35-11.

Division 4

Lucindale 44/12 d Port MacDonnell 38/2

IT was another disappointing result for Port MacDonnell’s Division 4 team as it hosted Lucindale.

With a win each to both teams, Alison Mitchell, Bill McGregor, Marilyn Sutton and Val Murrell went down to Lucindale’s Brodie Dupree, Glenda Smith, Carol Miller and John McLean with a score of 16-26.

On the second rink the Bay’s Suzanne Connell, Terry Stone, Justin Brown and Cheryle Doddridge played Pauline Rivett, Cheryl Ferguson, Eve Raynor and Margaret Fallon for a win.

However, with a margin of 22-18, Lucindale had the shots needed to secure the overall victory.
