Cricket: Home-ground advantage up for grabs

Clean bowled

PENOLA will continue to chase West Gambier’s run total of 118 in day two of Round 10 in the Mount Gambier and District Cricket’s Barber Shield competition tomorrow.

With the home-ground advantage and a small score to reach, the Eagles will come into the clash at McCorquindale Park with confidence.

Both sides will put it all on the line in the final day of the minor round season, with the winner earning itself a home semi-final.

Penola certainly has the momenutm.

And while it sits in a good position to take the premiership points, the Roos should never be underestimated.

West was arguably undermanned last Saturday and missed the services of Bowen Hosking.

The limited numbers will again strike tomorrow and the Roos will need to dig deep and bowl tight if they are to remain in the contest against a determined Eagles outfit.

Penola was ruthless with the ball on day one.

Both Brad Maney and George Kidman ripped through West’s batting lineup.

The big scores were limited due to the tight bowling from the Eagles.

West’s Shane Stevens top scored with just 24 runs, while next best was Jack Geddes on 20.

The Eagles will certainly have their sights set on a comfortable victory.

The changeover last weekend allowed Penola three overs at the crease before stumps.

Jack Schulz and Jack Mullan opened proceedings and played patient shots to hold their wickets for day two.

Schulz finished the day with four runs to his name, while Mullan contributed to the day one score with an unbeaten three.

With plenty of overs left in the game and a long list of talent below them, the duo will hope to keep the Eagles on the front foot early in tomorrow’s contest.

However, if the Roos can claim some quick wickets, the points could go either way.

With a home final on the line, there is plenty to play for, which should provide a good contest.
