Golf: Maxwell plays smart round

UNSTABLE conditions greeted golfers at the Attamurra golf course on Saturday, with strong winds making for a tough stableford competition.

John Maxwell produced the round of the day to beat a field of 129, with an impressive 41 points in the trying conditions.

His score saw him claim the B Grade winner’s cheque in front of Peter Berkefeld on 39 points.

In C Grade Des Guerin continued his good run of form with 40 points for first place, with Graham Robinson second on 39.

In A Grade it was visiting Willunga GC member Steven Williams who showed the locals how it is done, claiming first place by count-back over local identity Darren Bilney, with both players posting 38 points.

In D Grade it was Burt Van Nispen claiming first place with 34 points in front of Ricky Walker on 32.

Tough conditions meant players only required 34 points and a good back nine to claim a ball, with winners including Tony Geddes, Peter Lock, Chris Hill, Anthony Williams, Ross Bond, Adrian

Ballintyne, Joe Clements, Grant Harvey, Bill Degaris, Peter Fox, Kent Comely, Craig Wirth, Peter Waters, Setio Shanahan, Robert Young, Caleb Perry, Russel Lewis, Jonathan Bruhn, David Pateyjohns, Michael Bruggeman, Grant Lean, Bryan Walsh and Kevin Cook.

Walsh also claimed the nearest-the-pin on the 16th hole, while Maxwell capped off a great afternoon, claiming shot-of-the-day on the eighth.

Sixteen players managed a birdie-two, with some winners not already mentioned including Lyndsay Copeman, Jake Dempsey, Liam Nicks, Nicolas Atwell, Michael Cutting, Parker Smith, Brett Eadie and Ben Phelan.

Women’s Stableford

SHARRON Waters posted the round of the day for the women with a fine 39 points.

Heather Barry took second on 37 points, with Helen McIntyre and Julie Robinson third and fourth respectively by count-back on 33.

McIntyre and Robinson shared the par 3 spoils as well, with McIntyre claiming the pro-shot on 16, while Robinson claimed shot-of-the-day honours on the eighth.

Ideal conditions for Thursday golfers

PERFECT conditions on Thursday and a 93-man field meant something special would be required to claim the $100 winner’s cheque.

Chris Ryan stepped up to the plate with a fantastic 44 points, which saw him three points clear of Paul Kenny on 41, with Matt Bryant, Ian Ewart and Dave Boyce all posting 40 and finishing respectively on count-back.

Players required 37 points to claim a ball except for the ever-lucky trio of Charles Bkric, Peter Buckingham and Mike Atwell who slipped through as the best of the 36’s.

More legitimate winners included Mathew Dixon, Jim Pegler, peter Collie, David Roughana, Tony Geddes Chris Lynch, Grant Harvey, John Shirley, Ross Bond, Richard Taylor, John Gosling and Greg Hudson.

Seven players managed a birdie-two, with those not already mentioned including Digger Richardson, Russel Oehms, Ryan Meakin and Robert McLellan.

Pro-shot on the 16th belonged to Nic Clayton and McLellan also claimed the shot-of-the-day on the eighth.
