Swimming: Medal haul no stroke of luck

HOT FORM CONTINUES: Jordy Martin proudly dispalys his swag of medals from the South Australian Long Course State Swimming Championships in Adelaide.

Mount Gambier’s Jordy Martin has continued his golden streak in the pool with success at the recent South Australian Long Course State Swimming Championships in Adelaide.

Martin competed in the event run from January 17-20 and won four gold and two silver medals.

It follows his standout performance at the South Australian Country Swimming Championships hosted by Broken Hill in early January where Martin claimed seven gold medals and broke six records.

In his most recent foray in the pool, Martin – competing in the 11 and under boys division – claimed the honours in the 50 metre butterfly in a time of 32.36 seconds, the 100m freestyle in 1.05.98, the 200m freestyle in 2.22.87 and the boys 50m freestyle in 29.77.

Silver medals were won in the 200m individual medley and the 100m butterfly.

Martin also achieved personal-best times in both the heats and the finals.

It capped off a huge season for Martin after his family made the decision to move from their home town of Bendigo to Mount Gambier in August last year in the hope a private coach here would help him achieve his swimming goals.

The move paid off, with Martin going from strength to strength under the guidance of Colin Smith.

Martin, who has just turned 12 years of age, is now focused on the SAPSASA Championships on March 23 in Adelaide, making the SA Swim Team which is competing in Hobart later this year and achieving a qualifying time to compete when he is 13 at Age Nationals.
