Basketball: Hill squashes doubts

BACK FOR MORE: Mount Gambier Pioneers’ Brad Hill will be back for another South East Australian Basketball League season as the team chases yet another championship flag.

LEADING up to the 2018 South East Australian Basketball League season, there was some doubt whether Mount Gambier Pioneers player Brad Hill would be back.

But that doubt was dispelled this week with the announcement Hill will return.

End-of-season ankle surgery and a move to Cairns to be with his wife Julie signalled a likely end to the two-time Alan Scott medallist’s tenure with club.

However, numerous discussion’s with new Pioneers president Tom Kosch, successful surgery and the all clear from his wife ensured he will be back for another season.

Hill contributed 15.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.5 steals per game last season to help claim the Pioneers third national title in four years.

“Having Brad recommit to the team is huge for us,” coach Richard Hill said.

“He is a do it all type player, who like his team mates has always put the team first.”

Being able to return four starters from last year’s team gives the Pioneers a solid base to defend their SEABL title.

“I really like our team,” Hill said.

“The addition of Majok (Deng), Lewis (Thomas) and Kyle (Tipene) will give us a new and exciting look without causing much disruption.

“Brad, together with Tom (Daly) and Eze (Erik Burdon), have been part of five consecutive conference championships and provide great leadership and stability to compliment their obvious talent.

“This is a very good league that continues to grow and improve as we must if we wish to contend again.”

The Pioneers squad has been working individually and in small groups during December and January and will continue with this until the whole group comes together on February 22.

The team will play an extensive pre-season schedule, commencing with the annual Millicent tournament the first week in March, followed by a tournament in Geelong on March 17 and 18 and games the following week against Kilsyth and Dandenong in Melbourne.
