Baseball: Tigers grind to victory

Baseball game. Baseball ball in grass.

Tigers 2 d Federal 1

IT took 12 innings to decide Saturday’s Mount Gambier and District Baseball League clash between Tigers and Federal.

Federal scored its only run in the top of the third dig after having two out, where Gavin Smith singled to centre-field then advanced to third on Alex Reppin’s two bagger to right-field.

He then scored on Nathan Taylor’s hit to shortstop which resulted in a wild throw to first base allowing Smith to cross the plate.

Tigers replied in the bottom of the fourth when Alex Harkness doubled to left-field, went to third on Tyler Horrigan’s sacrifice bunt, then scored on Karl Ransom’s hit to third base.

This engaged a deadlock which took until the bottom of the 12th inning for Tigers to break the tie.

Brodie Foster picked a walk, advanced to second on Kirby Hillyer’s hit and then to third on the subsequent wild throw.

He then scored on Dyllan Lane’s single to centre-field, leading Tigers to a one-point victory.

It was a game of many facets with both teams having the opportunity to take charge.

Federal pitcher Reppin picked up 17 K’s for the match, while Tigers’ Ransom pitched 10 and reliever Foster claimed five.

Both teams made five errors for the game, but the main difference was in the batting.

Federal had 10 safe hits for the night, but left 15 runs stranded on base.

Tigers only had four safe hits, but left nine runners on board.

South Indians 8 d Central 2

SOUTH held its position at the top of the table when it easily defeated Central in the early game on Saturday.

The Indians secured all of their runs before Central was even able to put a score on the board.

Their first came in the top of the first when Bruce Morale hit safely to centre-field then scored on brother Ben’s double into right-field.

Two more came in the second when Bruce Morale hit safely into centre-field – this time a triple – and scored on Dean Hamilton’s two bagger into left-field.

Hamilton scored on Travis Lockwood’s drive into right-field before the inning was wrapped up.

In the top of the fourth, Steve Isaccson singled to deep shortstop, later advancing to third on a wild throw from the catcher, then scored on Bruce Morale’s third hit for the night.

Morale eventually scored on a wild pitch.

South’s third run of the inning came when Hamilton got on board from a single and scored on Jesse Balshaw’s hit to shortstop.

It was not until the top of the eighth the Indians scored their final two runs, both unearned.

Hamilton again doubled and scored on Lockwood’s hit to third which resulted in an error.

Balshaw had previously got to first on a fielders’s choice and scored on error at left-field.

Central’s only two runs came in the bottom of the ninth innings, when Dylan Chuck found himself at first after an error by the shortstop, before advancing to second on a wild pitch then scoring on Mark Kilpatrick’s double to leftfield.

He stole to third and scored on Rick Jordan’s fielder’s choice hit to shortstop before the inning was wrapped up.

At the end of the match, South had outhit Central 11 to five and South’s Bruce Morale finished with 10 K’s, while Central’s Chuck picked up six.
