FINAL preparations are being made for the popular Coonawarra Vignerons Cup tomorrow with organisers ensuring horses and attendees are kept cool during the predicted scorching conditions.

With temperatures forecast to be around the 40C mark, starting times for all races have been moved forward considerably.

Thoroughbred Racing SA’s Craig Kutcher told The Pennant they were looking at starting the first race at 10am.

“We would like to get the racing over by early afternoon before the real heat of the day arrives,” Mr Kutcher said.

Penola Racing Club secretary Jim May said all was looking good ahead of the event, with the track in great condition.

“It looks like it will be perfect racing conditions on the day, with the track being watered in preparation for the weather predicted,” Mr May said.

Booking wise, Mr May said the vignerons marque was sold out, with around 700 people to attend.

“Numbers are outstanding and in all it is set to be a fantastic day,” he said.

“We do have an eye on the weather as it is going to be a little warm, but have many cooling facilities in place – not only for the horses but also attendees.”

Both marques will be air-conditioned, along with the dining room and Mr May ensured plenty of water and food would be available.

It will not be the first time the event had experienced hot conditions.

“We had a hot race three or four years ago and we will certainly be looking after the horses side of things, with a mister system in place in all horse stalls,” Mr May said.

He said the jockeys’ rooms were all air-conditioned with plenty of shade.

“Catering for the public will be our main priority and we will be looking to keep them as cool as we possibly can ,” Mr May said.

Eight races are scheduled and it is expected the last race will be at 1.55pm.
