Swimming: Country Championships worth the journey

STATE SUCCESS: Charlotte Smith, head coach Pat Wheeler, Jordy Martin, Madison Smith, Kiah Connolly and coach Colin Smith show off the well-deserved prizes of the recent South Australian Country Swimming Championships in Broken Hill.

AFTER finding a new home with the Onkaparinga Swimming Club, four Mount Gambier swimmers and their coach have reaped rewards at the South Australian Country Swimming Championships.

Since joining their new club, Charlotte and Madison Smith, Jordy Martin and Kiah Connolly have been training in Mount Gambier under the guidance of coach Colin Smith, making the trip to Onkaparinga every two weeks to practice with the club.

Never losing sight of their goals, the hard work by the swimmers saw them help the Onkaparinga Swimming Club to the overall points championship, along with the female and male points championships at the event held in Broken hill from January 4-8.

This impressive feat was topped off by some solid individual performances from the local competitors.

In competitive age groups, the four swimmers managed 10 gold, three silver and eight bronze medals, along with four SA Country records, two of which were previously held by Olympic gold medallist Kyle Chalmers.

Over the course of the event, the young swimmers managed 23 personal best times.

Martin also received awards for the 11-year-old age group points champion and the best 200 metre freestyle.

The swimmers have now returned home and continue training for the upcoming South Australian State Championships.
