Bowls: Club championships at the bay

SOLE SURVIVOR: Port MacDonnell’s Ron Cox defeated each of his opponents in the men’s singles championships to win the title for 2017-18, with his final clash seeing him with a five-shot win over runner-up Chris Richards.

Singles Championships

THE men’s and women’s championship Singles were played at the Port MacDonnell Bowling Club over the weekend.

With the men starting on Saturday, play was stopped at 11am due to the heat, but continued later in the day in the cooler conditions.

In the final, Chris Richards and Ron Cox locked horns, with the latter claiming the 2017-18 title.

Cox started well and was 11 shots up on Richards at one stage, before he came back to be only three shots down going into the last end.

However, Cox was able to score two shots and hence claim the win by five.

To reach the final, Cox defeated Bruce Bain in the semi final, while Richards accounted for Kel Butler.

For the women it was Heather Richards who secured the bragging rights on Sunday.

Up against Joy Bilney in the grand final, Richards continued her steady and accurate bowling to take out the women’s title for the season.

Fours Championships

FANTASTIC FOUR: Port MacDonnell’s Cheryl Doddridge, Shirley Taylor, Alison Mitchell and Kay Feast claimed the women’s fours championship by a single shot.

THE Port MacDonnell and District Bowling Club finished the 2017 stint of the season with its men’s and women’s championship fours events.

For the men, the team of Chris Richards, David Gould, Bill Mitchell and skipper Marcus Pietersma proved themselves as the side to beat.

In the final Pietersma’s rink accounted for Joe Pruis, Ben Tilley, Kevin Henderson and skipper John Broadbent, hence taking out the 2017-18 title.

In the women’s competition, some new names were added to the honour board, with the winning team of Shirley Taylor, Alison Mitchell and Kay Feast skippered by Cheryle Doddridge.

The side defeated Roma Henderson’s rink of Betty Barrett, Colleen Tarca and Lyn Jones in the final, with only one shot between the teams after the final end.
