Golf: Summer sun throws curveball for Saturday competition

COOL SHOT: After the weather cooled down somewhat for the Thursday golfers at the Attamurra golf course, Russell Oehms claimed the shot-of-the-day on the eighth hole.

SATURDAY’S predicted heat wave saw a smaller than usual field of 73 at the Attamurra golf course, with all but three players off before 8.15am.

By 11.30am the temperature was 40 degrees in the shade and god knows how hot for the good players in the fairway.

Only seven players managed to play to, or better than their handicap, with Ian Ritter posting the round-of-the-day to claim the C Grade medal with nett 68.

Kevin Cook continued a run of form to claim A Grade with 69.

Ricky Walker was best in D Grade with a 71, along with Peter Waters (second A Grade), Wayne Elliot and Bryan Pink.

Daryl Morgan finished with a 72 nett, playing off zero.

Peter Berkfeld claimed the B Grade medal by count-back from Graham Greenwood, both with 73’s.

Other winners included Craig Foster, Jeff Hodge, Stacy Fiegert, Matty Knowles, David McGregor, Brian Hunt, Russell Lewis, Nick Black and Elliot King.

Brad Von Duve and Wayne Elliot both grabbed a pair of birdie-twos, while Pink, Barry Page, Dave Boyce and Leigh McCracken all settled for one.

Haydn Dow claimed the pro-shot on the 16th hole, while shot-of-the-day belonged to Wayne Elliot on the eighth.

Cool Thursday stableford

THE fine weather on Thursday saw another excellent field of 101 players.

Barry Page was better than 100 of them, finishing with 43 points, ahead of David Turnbull on 41.

Rob McIntyre, Tom Jellesma and John Shirley all posted 40 points.

Setio Shanahan had 39, with Peter Waters, Nick Moretti, Tony Whatt and Robert Young all posting 38.

Players needed 35 points or better to win a ball, except for Des Guerin who somehow claimed one with 34 points.

More legitimate winners included Todd Lillicrap, Chris Lynch, Patrick Dempsey, Winston Prowse, Garry Button, Judson Wheatley, Malcolm Treloar, Nick Black, Des Taylor, Mark Winterfield, Trent Eitzen and Des Guerin.

The pro-shot on the 16th hole belonged to Jason Millhouse and shot-of-the-day on the eighth went to Russell Oehms.

Seven players managed a birdie-two to win a ball, including Rodney Summers, Jeff Hodge, Mark Winterfield, Shirley, Prowse, Eitzen and Shanahan.

CUP Leaderboard open

GRAHAM Thomas continues to lead going in to the back half of the Driscoll Summer Cup series.

Only three rounds remain and only 10 points separate the top 10 players.

While Lyndsay Copeman and Peter Waters are only a few points behind, other dark horses like Boyce and Moretti have an opportunity to come home with a flurry.
