Golf: Golfers get early start for stroke round

GOOD FORM: David Goldspring continued his good form at the Blue Lake Golf Links with an impressive round of 82-19-63, dropping yet another stroke off his handicap.

SATURDAY was an early start for some golfers at the Blue Lake Golf Links as predicted hot weather and strong winds had players teeing off at 5.30am.

It was David Goldspring who led the 65-strong field for the stroke competition with 82-19-63 as he dropped yet another stroke off his handicap.

The ever-consistent Ian Bown won A Grade with 77-12-65 nett, edging out Setio Shanahan on a count-back, who also carded an excellent round in the heat and wind to be on one over par 69-4-65.

Rounding out the placings was club president Matt Jennings, four shots back on 82-13-69 nett.

Anthony Hughes returned to the winners circle in style with a score of 86-22-64 nett, followed by Stephen VonDuve, who continues to play well since taking up the sport again with a score of 84-18-66.

One shot further back was David Johnston, returning to the clubhouse with 90-23-67 nett.

Club veteran and regular early morning golfer Colin Rex beat the heat and scorched around the course to record a win as he carded a round of 92-38-65 nett to narrowly edge out another club veteran Don Annand, who was one shot back on 90-24-66.

Rounding out the placings with a round of 99-31-68 was Brian Dunn.

Ball run down winners were Terry Earl (68), Tony Morandin, Bob White, Brian Vawser (69), Gordon Parry, Alan Gale, Fred Knight, Colin Tester (70), Michael Jazepczyk and Gavin Sparrow (71) on a count-back.

The pro-shots winners were Trevor Little on the fifth hole and Alan Gale on the 16th, with the pair collecting four balls each.

Matt Jennings claimed nearest the pin in A Grade.

Long drives went to A Grade’s Ian Bown, B Grade’s Michael Jazepczyk and C Grade’s Richard Dean.

Fiona Punton was best for the women with a 73 nett.

Nearest the pin went to Dianne Perryman, who also won the long drive, while Lyn Annand had the least putts for the day.

The hole-in-one cash jackpot is $1000.

Big Tuesday field

A LARGE field of 55 players greeted the starter on Tuesday and it was visiting Millicent golfer Justyn Saint who upset the locals with a fine rounds of 40 points.

He was followed by dual Port MacDonnell member Ben Wilson, one shot back on 39 and flying the flag for the locals was Michael Dawe who finished third on a count-back with 38 points in a welcome return to competition golf.

Ball run down winner were Tyson Ploenges, Anthony Hughes, Stephen VonDuve, Ray Patching (38) and Colin Tester (37) on a count-back.

The pro-shot on the par three, fifth hole went to James Eastick, who collected four balls for his nearest the pin.

The eagles nest was cleaned out by Gavin Sparrow, who eagled the par four, 12th hole and Ben Wilson who eagled the par four first.

The hole-in-one voucher jackpot is now $1373.

Gale in form for night competition

WEDNESDAY saw Alan Gale shoot the lights out playing alongside his son as he collected a massive 25 points for his nine holes to claim the daylight savings competition win.

Craig Donaldson finished second on a count-back with a score of 22 from Port MacDonnell member Zac Williams, who also returned to the clubhouse with a score of 22 points.

Bill Burley had a day out on the par three’s as he collected six balls for each of his nearest-the-pins on the second and fifth holes.

The eagle cash jackpot is $289.
