Archery: Freeman locked in

WAY TO FINISH: Phil Tremelling finished 2017 on a high note with this excellent group of arrows that was close to his first all gold since returning to the recurve bow.

THE Blue Lake Archers finished 2017 with a solid workout in a 120-arrow event that helped tune the competitors for a tournament which is now just three weeks away.

This week Sunday’s outdoor round clashed with New Year’s Eve and this reduced the number of archers available to attend the Corriedale Park range to just five.

A Brisbane round over 70, 60, 50 and 40 metres gave the archers a chance to check they have all the settings for those same distances, which will to be used in the tournament.

To add some additional flavour in this round the shorter two distance require a swap from 122cm target faces back to 80cm faces.

Phil Tremelling was back in action with his recurve bow and finally set his handicap score rating after the switch from compound bow.

Tremelling’s initial scores at the longer ranges yielded a lower tally than he thought he was capable of but was bemused to find that as the day wore on and fatigue started to be noticeable that his performance actually improved.

Tremelling finished the day with his best groups of the day and was oh so close to an all gold end from his final six arrows.

It was Graham Lock’s turn to have the equipment gremlins visit, but a running repair after the half way break keeping him in the game.

Paul Freeman had a blinder of a start at 70 metres and found himself in the territory he would like to become accustomed to, leading the off the bow scores by four points.

At the halfway break it was neck-and-neck for the highest off the bow score bragging rights with only one point separating Freeman’s score from Locks.

As the final two distances played out Lock was back on his game after banishing the equipment gremlins and Freeman was in somewhat unfamiliar territory with his first match that was greater than 90 arrows.

Lock opened gap in the off the bow scores to 22 points at the end of the day but Freeman had the last and biggest laugh as he convincingly won the day on adjusted scores, trouncing his distant opposition to the tune of 127 points.
