Motorsport: Speedway triple threat

READY TO ROLL: Mount Gambier driver Jason Duell – pictured winning the Northern Territory title late last year – is one of many local drivers to sign up for the Mount Gambier Blue Lake Classic SA Twin City Street Stock Nationals Round 16 to be held at the Borderline Speedway tomorrow night.

CLASSES are fully stocked and as a result the Tri Feature Night at the Borderline Speedway is promised to be an event of action packed racing.

Wingless sprints, street stocks and speedcars will all compete for the top step of the podium at the Glenburnie circuit tomorrow night.

The close racing will have the crowd on the edge of their seats with many talented drivers in the mix for all three classes.

The wingless sprints will vy for the Summer Slam honours – with the Borderline Speedway stop marked as night two.

Speedcars will take part in Round 3 of their super series, while the street stocks will compete in the Mount Gambier Blue Lake Classic SA Twin City, Round 16 of the Street Stock Nationals series.

The South East is renowned for its ability to produce quality drivers, particularly in the street stock class.

This weekend alone will see two former multi-time Australian title winners from Mount Gambier – Mark Jennings and Anthony Beare – challenge the remainder of the field for victory.

Both Jennings and Beare will have their work cut out with Brad McLure and current Australia number one Rhys Heinrich in the mix.

McLure has snatched the Australian title on an impressive six occasions, while Heinrich has claimed back-to-back honours and will aim for a three-peat come this year’s national’s in Adelaide next month.

Mark Gartner – son of former multi-time national champion David Gartner from Penola – will also gear up for tomorrow night’s racing.

Mark is a true talent, along with his brother Steven – who has not nominated for the Borderline this weekend – and both have reached the podium at the Australian titles in previous years.

Current Northern Territory Street Stock title holder Jason Duell is another Mount Gambier local who has signed up for the night’s racing, as is Jason Edwards and Penola’s Scott Merrett.

Majority of drivers have entered into the Round 15 of the Street Stock National series, which is held in Hamilton tonight, drawing more drivers to the Blue Lake City tomorrow.

With plenty of local interest and a large calibre of drivers, the street stock class of 33 in Mount Gambier promises to bring some adrenaline-rushing action.

For the wingless sprints Mitchell Broome and Trent Gravestock will wave the Mount Gambier flag.

A total of 41 drivers have nominated for the wingless class, which will also showcase some close racing.

Club president Cary Jennings said the two local wingless drivers have been putting together solid performances so far this speedway season.

“Young Mitch has been doing really well just recently,” he said.

“Trent has also got a sprintcar, but he is still doing his wingless sprints as well, which is good.

“He has always been a fierce competitor, but so has the young Mitchell Broome.

“He always seems to finish on the podium, no matter where he is racing lately.”

With plenty of local drivers nominated and a number of talented interstate competitors also signed up, Jennings said he looked forward to another great event at the Borderline Speedway.

“We have got speedcars coming back for the first time in a while and we have got a wingless sprint series and a Blue Lake Classic for the street stocks,” he said.

“In total we have about 95 vehicles.

“It is excellent this time of year, people seem to have a holiday break over the Christmas period and so we get well supported.”

After an impressive entry list last week at the World Series Sprintcar round, Jennings said he was pleased with the influx of competitors again this weekend.

“We had in excess of 50 sprintcars and more than 40 formula 500s last week and this weekend we are able to welcome another 90-odd cars into Mount Gambier,” he said.

“It is a busy period for us as we head into our Kings Challenge event and then into the Australian Sprintcar Title, which is going to be a big boost for Mount Gambier, as well as the Borderline Speedway.”

With four national champions, as well as state title holders in the mix for the street stocks alonw, Jennings believes tomorrow night will bring tight racing.

“It is a good calibre of competitors who have nominated to race on the Borderline Speedway clay,” he said.

“These classes are hosting some of the best competitors in their three groups.

“We will get the racing crankt up at 6pm and around 30 events are scheduled.

“It will be a really good night, I am looking forward to it.

“It will be good racing and good spectator viewing.”

After the endless support from both drivers and enthusiasts this season Jennings thanked the volunteers who help both run each event and with the facility upgrades recently.

“The property has been upgraded tremendously,” he said.

“I would just like to thank all of our volunteers who make these shows happen.

“Without them the speedway would not survive.”

Practise will kick off at 4pm tomorrow night, before racing which will start at 6pm.
