Motorsport: National racing star jest from New Zealand to Blue Lake city

MICHAEL Stewart will make a mercy dash from Auckland to compete in Round 3 of the Diamond Air Speedcar Super Series at Mount Gambier’s Borderline Speedway tomorrow night.

Stewart is currently on international duty representing Australia at Auckland’s Western Springs Speedway competing against drivers from America and the best from New Zealand.

But the Speedcar Super Series rates high on the agenda for Stewart who is enjoying a competitive tournament and trails championship leader, Victorian Travis Mills, by only 30 points heading to into the Mount Gambier round.

The Stewart team are geared up to ensure their driver is ready for this important round of the Diamond Air SSS.

Stewart will compete in the World 50-lap Derby on Friday night and the next morning will fly to Melbourne where his crew will be waiting, complete with race car in tow, for the road trip to Mount Gambier.

“It is very indicative of how close the series currently is and points are vital,” SSS general manager Ken Jenkins said.

“This round is looming as one of the most important in the series which is clearly developing into a battle between Michael Stewart and Travis Mills.

“Both are enjoying a very good series and I am sure they will again be battling for main event honours among others.”

There is every indication the series could well be fought out between Mills and Stewart as both have secured a good points buffer to third placed man in the point standings, Reagan Angel.

Angel also is in good form heading to Mount Gambier following his great drive into second placing behind winner Adam Clarke in the New South Wales Speedcar Championship at Sydney’s Valvoline Raceway on January 1.

The other interesting factor surrounding round three is the return of the SSS to Borderline Speedway after a number of years’ absence.

This represents “neutral ground” for some of the drivers entered for this weekend.

A level playing field for a round that carries so much importance ensures there will be some tough competition on the night which for years has been a SSS trademark.

Diamond Air SSS organisers have received a strong entry list with good representation from South Australia, Victoria and NSW.

The outcome of this round in this season’s Diamond Air Speedcar Super Series could be a major factor in ultimately determining the outcome of the 2017/18 championship.

Top 10 point standings: Travis Mills (1832), Michael Stewart (1802), Reagan Angel (1107), Troy Ware (654), Jimi Ray-Quin (508), Adam Wallis (449), Scott Doyle (434), Andy Hassan (327) and Mike Griffiths (190).
