Motorsport: Historics make return to track

AIMING HIGH: After a National Historics Period 3 Unlimited title on board the Graeme Wagland prepared JAP 1000, David Trotter will aim to content the SA Historic Championship when it rolls into McNamara Park this weekend.

McNAMARA Park will become the centre of entertainment when the South Australian Historic Championship hits the road track on the weekend.

Held Saturday and Sunday by the Historic Motorcycle Road Registration of South Australia, the competition is expected to bring riders from far and wide.

While numbers are slightly down on previous years, close racing in each class – which range from 1920 to 1983 models – is promised.

David Trotter is hot from his National Historics title win on board the Graeme Wagland prepared JAP 1000.

Trotter won the Period 3 Unlimited title and hopes to back it up with a South Australian championship this weekend.

His main competition is likely to come from his father Darren Trotter current P3 (1946 – 1962) Unlimited lap record holder at McNamara Park.

He will be on board the David Atkinson prepared 650cc Manx.

Local Adrian Wright is also a contender, along with Victorian Stan Mucha on his Nordian 900cc.

Period 2 Bikes (1920-1945) sees member David Morse on his Velocette 500 up against Murray Johnson’s Harley WLA 750 and Stan Mucha on board his Indian Altoona 998.

Last year saw Mucha took the honours from Morse, but this weekend could go either way.

Class C (Pre 1951 500cc OHV and 750cc side valve, hand change, Rigid Frames) sees a small field with member Wayne Fary hoping to take out honours again, while P5 (1973 – 1983) 125cc machines are well represented with McNamara Park member David Short hoping to win after his commendable third at Goulbourn in November.

P3 (1946 – 1962) 500cc premier class is a little light on numbers this year in comparison to previous seasons.

But with names such as Keith Campbell, Darren Trotter and Trarglon based rider Greg Watkins it is sure to produce some tight racing.

Local rider Robert Day will test his luck on his SuzukiT250 alongside fellow member Ross Peters in the P4 (1963 -1972) 250cc class.
The largest grid of the weekend goes to P5 (1973-1983) 250cc with 17 motorycles.

Father and daughter Wally and Kelly Ryan will be competing against each other, along with McNamara Park members and brothers Robin and Garth Williams, as well as Warrnambool identity Wayne Fary.

Just four have entered in the sidecars, but despite the small numbers all competitors will be fighting for top step of the podium.

Feature races for the weekend are the Ken Blake Memorial which are open to P3 and P4 machinery of all capacities.

Last year’s winner Simon Cook on his P4 Honda 1120 will aim for back-to-back honours, while Darren and David Trotter will aim to turn the tides.
