Speedway: World Series arrives

THE rejuvenated World Series Sprintcars roars into life tomorrow night at the Borderline Speedway, Mount Gambier with the running of Round 3 of this summer’s tournament, which doubles as Round 3 of Speedweek.

At the time of print, Round 1 was underway at Murray Bridge, while Round 2 takes place tonight on the same track.

Round 3 takes place at Mount Gambier tomorrow night and by this time two winners would have already taken home $10,000.

The series this season sees 16 contracted drivers take on the full schedule and they will all be in action at the Borderline Speedway.

Headlining an impressive cast are defending series champion James McFadden, 2015/16 champ Jamie Veal, 2017 Classic runner-up Darren Mollenoyux, local hero Glen Sutherland, South Aussie star Brad Keller, Sydney’s Michael Saller, Queensland’s Lachie McHugh and Kevin Titman and Warrnambool’s Jye O’Keeffe and Jack Lee.

However, the list does not stop there with American superstars Carson Macedo and Domenic Szelci appearing, as well as current Victorian champion David Murcott and Western Australian’s

Daniel Harding, Jason Pryde and Mitch Wormall.

As usual with Speedweek a few drivers join on specific nights and this year Australian champion Kerry Madsen will return to Borderline and will be in action, along with 2016 Knoxville Nationals winner Jason Johnson who has good form at the venue having won several WSS rounds in the past.

Another American young gun in Cory Eliason will also be in attendance as will dual Classic winner and local hero Steven Lines, Warrnambool’s Tim Van Ginneken, Gawler’s Ricky Maiolo, Western Australia’s Taylor Milling, Adelaide resident Brock Hallett, local gun Jake Tranter and fast female racer Lisa Walker.

South Australian stars Luke Dillon and Matt Egel will join the remainder of the competitors, along with Western Australia’s James Inglis who will make his debut at the Borderline Speedway.

There are several other drivers who have done well at Mount Gambier in the past who have also entered amongst the strong 50 car entry and they are Daniel Pestka, Shaun Dobson, Aidan Hall and Tim Hutchins to name a few.

It will be one of the last chances drivers get to run at the track before the Australian Title at venue next month.

With so many cars entered two groups of qualifying will be required to seed the heats for the nights racing along with the shootout events, before the features on the night.

However, it will not be just sprintcars in action tomorrow night as Round 2 of Formula 500 Speedweek will also take place.

A cracking field of 42 cars have nominated for the night of racing, including American Frank Galusha.

Galusha will be tough to beat and with 2016/17 Speedweek winner Liam Williams away in America this week, it is known a new champion will be crowned.

Victoria is well represented with Chris Bellman leading the nominations, along with brother Dion.

Both are in excellent form at present, however, they will have their work cut out as Jack Bell, Ash and Dale Sinclair, fast female racer Ashlee Aranyosi, Josh Buckingham, Matthew Symons, Jake Hose, Leigh Van Ginneken, rookie Angus Hollis and Stephen Bell will battl for a good finish.

Queensland is represented well once again with Ryan Skennar, Ryan McNamara, rookie Randy Morgan, James Kennedy and Kaydon Iverson making the long trip down.

The local contingent will have Jordan Mansell leading the way, along with Brad Stell and Richard Schmidt.

With a top drivers entering in both the sprintcars and formula 500s, tomorrow night’s event at the Borderline Speedway is expected to be full of fast racing.

Gates open at 4pm, followed by hot-laps at 5pm and racing at 6pm.
