NORTH Sportsman’s claimed first-innings points over South Gambier in Round 5 of the Barber Shield cricket season, despite a low score on day one of play.

North was knocked over for 126 in the 66th over on their home deck at Marist Park, leaving South with the chance of an upset victory.

That chance received a blow on day one, when Sam Phelan and Luke Zadow were sent back to the side lines, with the overnight score of 2/4 not the ideal start to the run chase.

Both were judged lbw in a fiery spell by Josh Fidler, leaving Adam Kuhl and Camron Jorgenson to pick up the pieces on day two.

The pair set about chasing down the total, with Kuhl playing an anchor role, while Jorgenson began to find runs.

Unfortunately it all came to an end within sight of Jorgenson’s half-century, with Michael Jonston claiming his prized scalp for 44.

With the total at just 56, it was not long before matters became worse, with Kuhl out just two runs later, a victim of Nick McInerney.

From there the wickets began to tumble, with Dylan Clough the only other bastman to reach double figures.

However, his 16 runs was not enough for the Demons to reach the required runs, losing on first-innings points after amassing just 92.

Johnston and Matt McInerney did the main damage, with three wickets each.

North then returned to the batting crease, with another 30 overs to add points to their season.

In contrast to the first innings, just two wickets were lost, with Jake Schutz falling to Kuhl for 12, while Nick McInerney managed a well-compiled half-century, eventually bowled by Phelan for 63.

His innings included five fours and a pair of sixes.
