Disc Golf: Schulz claims national title

MOUNT Gambier can now boast a new national champion, after Michelle Schulz claimed the women’s novice division title at the 2017 Australian Disc Golf Championships in Perth recently.

Despite leading the way throughout the three-day event, Schulz had to hold back a late challenge from fellow Mount Gambier competitor Renae Nicholson in a dash to the finish.

However, Schulz held firm and eventually secured the honours by seven shots.

Mount Gambier Disc Golf president Ryan Nicholson also performed on the national stage, achieving a respectable fourth place in the men’s novice division.

He also finished in second place for the Australian tour, after solid results in tour events throughout the year earned him a total of 301 points.

This saw Nicholson secure the runner-up honours in a field of 128 competitors.

The 2017 Australian Disc Golf Championships saw close to 100 competitors battle the high temperatures at Perth’s Edgar Griffiths Park and it was New Zealander Jackson Sullivan who took out the men’s open title.

With a successful championship campaign behind it, the Mount Gambier Disc Golf community is buzzing with excitement and is confident 2018 can bring more results.

The club also has a bid for the 2018 South Australian open in May, which is shaping to be large event on the disc golf calendar and could draw many of Australia’s top players to the region.
