LSEBA: Mount Gambier bowlers hit greens to decide triples championship

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS: Bev Neave, Coral Clarke and Leanne Hentschke took out the Mount Gambier Bowls Club women’s club triples championship on Sunday.

THE team of Jeff England, Jeff Collins and Steve Farrell were crowned men’s triples champions at the Mount Gambier Bowls Club’s annual event on Sunday after a tough battle with the team of Ian VonStanke, Daryll Raneberg and Bill Bremner.

The game went down to the wire, with England claiming a late shot to seal the title.

For the women, Leanne Hentschke led Coral Clarke and Bev Neave to an equally close championship, with just two shots separating the two sides at the end of the day.

The men’s event consisted of three games of 12 ends sectional play.

England’s and VonStanke’s teams went head-to-head in the final and after 12 ends the scores were level.

With 18 ends to play the game went down to the wire, with the final end seeing VonStanke three shots down on the card, but holding four shots with one bowl to be played.

As he had done in the previous game to get into the final, England used his bowl to great effect and slightly overweight he managed to get a rub off one of the shot bowls and roll in for shot to claim the championship.

For the women’s event, games were played over 15 ends.

Hentschke’s team faced Rebecca Gruar, Bethne Sheperd and Jane Callega in the final played over 18 ends.

In a tight affair, Henstchke’s team eventually claimed the honours by a narrow two shots (19-17).
