Shooting: Height raises the bar again

OVERALL HONOURS: Overall Championship and AA Grade winner in the Double Barrel Gavin Height is joined by club president Brian Jarrett after the day’s event.

A COOL and damp start to the day greeted the Bordertown Gun Club’s monthly shoot event recently.

The gusty frontal wind kept shooters working for their targets and many scores finished below par in both events.

A field of 26 shooters competed in the day consisting of two events, with Dimboola, Horsham, Jeparit, Kingston, Mount Gambier, Wilkawatt and Bordertown all represented.

The first event was a 50-Target Continental Championship, which saw the best score go to Gavin Height, who claimed the overall and AA Grade wins with 53/54.

He was followed by Max Medhurst with 52/54, while the A Grade win went to John Hawker with 47/50, ahead of Allan Jones on 46/50.

In B B Grade it was Andrew Ryan who took out the honours with 50/57, while Malcolm McGrice finished as runner-up with 49/57.

Mark Newcombe shot a 46/50 to win C Grade, followed by Kane Hawker with 42/50.

The second event for the day was a 50-Target Double Barrel.

Once again the wind made for challenging shooting and most shooters were likely disappointed with their score.

Height led the way again, with 49/50 to win AA Grade, while Andrew Hoare settled for second with 48/50.

In A Grade Allan Jones shot 49/50 as well to secure the honours, ahead of Ian Heard with 57/62.

Bob Atkinson scored 47/50 to win B Grade from Andrew Ryan with 45/50, while C Grade saw Mark Newcombe claim his second win with 45/50 over Kane Hawker with 44/50.

The club’s next monthly shoot will held on Sunday January 26, with a 50-Target Double Barrel Championship and 25-Target Single Barrel, plus 25-Target Continental event.

Practice will be from 11.30am for a 12 noon start.
