A SOLID performance from those down the order allowed Mil Lel to claim its first win of the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association Barber Shield competition against East Gambier at Frew Park on Saturday.

East won the toss and put the hosts in to bat first.

The Bulldogs were dominant from the outset, claiming four wickets before Mil Lel had reached 20 runs.

Justin Lamont (9), Josh Jantosh (1), Jarryd Burston (1) and Jack Miller (7) were all dismissed in the early overs of the game.

However, Todd Carpenter and Jonathan Allcock handed the hosts their second chance.

The two put together a solid 70-run partnership.

Carpenter was first to lose his wicket with a credible 41 runs, but it did not stop Mil Lel’s dominance at the crease.

Daniel Justin padded up and joined Allcock for what was another formidable partnership of 38 runs.

Justin was the next wicket to fall after making 15 runs.

With 127 runs on the scoreboard and little time left both Allcock and Craig Lock went to work.

The two increased the total to 153 before Allcock was dismissed after reaching his half-century on 53.

Lock finished the innings on 13 not out.

Mil Lel’s final score was 8/153.

It was a team effort from East with Alex Hentschke, Simon Golebiowski and Luke Allen all claiming two scalps each.

East understood it would be tough to out-play a confident Mil Lel outfit, but went out with determination to get the job done.

A satisfactory start saw the Bulldogs in contention early.

However, it was all downhill from there.

Darren Whitehorn was able to put together a solid opening performance, but his partner in crime Craig Lynch fell early for just one run.

Peter Kerr, Golebiowski, Nathan Gore, Connor Little and Allen were all sent walking with ducks, which left little hope for East.

Whitehorn managed 13 runs, but best with the bat was Hentschke who contributed to the total with 24 from number three.

Skipper Dion Stratford could only manage four before he was caught Jantosh and bowled Miller.

Emmerson Marks (eight) and Thomas Miles (three not out) were the only others to make runs.

It was a disappointing team performance from East who managed just 64 runs in 26 overs.

Mil Lel’s Ben Thiel and Miller both claimed three scalps, while Tom Nieuwerkerk and Todd Carpenter chipped in with two apiece.

With ample time still remaining, Mil Lel batted out its second innings.

It was a disappointing start once again with Carey Megaw (1), Jantosh (1), Niewerkerk (0) and Burston (3), Thiel (4) all falling for small totals.

However, Justin was able to pull together for a 30 not out, while Allcock finished the overs with three not out.

East’s Miles was most impressive with the ball in the second innings, posting 3/6 off three overs.

However, Mil Lel still posted 5/44 in 10 overs and as a result claimed a convincing victory.

On the other hand, East now sits at the bottom of the Barber Shield ladder and will aim on improvement come the second half of the season.
