ROUND 6 of Mount Gambier and District tennis kicked off once again with the A1 matches on Friday night, before the remaining grades took to the courts on Saturday.

This week the A2 competition heated up, with the results seeing Mount Schank make a claim for second place on the ladder, after defeating the now third West Gambier Blue.

Meanwhile, Glencoe Maroon maintained the top spot as it accounted for Suttontown, while Glencoe Gold claimed a solid 10-set win over Centrals.

With West’s Red team having the bye, the Blue side hosted Mount Schank for what resulted in a four-set loss for the home team.

Craig Nisbet led the way for Mount Schank’s men, as the number one player defeated West’s Lachlan Charlton 6-3.

Will Seidel followed suit, as he accounted for Jamie Higgins 6-3, while Chris Hunt and Greg Jenkinson were defeated by West’s Mark Stutley and Zayne Young respectively.

For the women, Mount Schank’s Clair Waye had a good result against West’s Laura McIntyre, winning the match 6-4.

Halle Collins and Kaitlyn Nisbet also had solid wins for the guests, but West’s Jane Jolley bested Sophie Boston.

Mount Schank remained in a good position going into the doubles games and with five of the eight matches going its way, the visitors went home with their third win for the season.

Ladder-leader Glencoe Maroon visited Suttontown for Round 6, where it also managed a four-set victory over its opponent.

With Suttontown occupying the bottom of the ladder with only one win to its name, this deficit was a solid effort against the undefeated Glencoe side.

Suttontown’s Craig Beck had a tough encounter with Dave Boyce, but was able to come out on top with a 7-5 win, but this was the only win for the men’s singles.

Cameron Pritchard, Nick Childs and Joel Childs each recorded losses to Troy Clasohm, Craig Childs and Will Hann respectively.

But all was not lost, as Suttontown’s women stepped up, with Jade Delaney defeating Abbie Cocks 6-0, Trudy-Anne Doyle accounting for Katherine Finnis in a tiebreaker and Neave Delaney winning against Erica Hurley 6-4.

However, Glencoe Maroon hit hard in the doubles matches to win six of the eight games, hence putting an end to the spark shown by the home team.

This was not the only A2 win for the Glencoe Tennis Club on Saturday, with the Gold team also winning its Round 6 meeting when it hosted Centrals.

Each of the Glencoe Gold men won their singles matches, with Aaron Pitson the closest game, as he defeated Dane Heemskerk 7-6 after a tiebreak.

In the women’s singles, Glencoe’s Alison Meyer accounted for Caitlyn Poel 6-2, while Alison Auld defeated Hayley Hamilton 6-0 and Nicole Milosevic claimed a 6-4 win over Jaslyn Poel.

With Eliza Cole the only Glencoe player unable to secure the win – after Rachel Hamilton proved too strong to record a 6-1 win for Centrals – the home team remained in good stead going into the doubles matches.

Centrals was able to claim two sets in the doubles to finish on three for the day, but with a total of 13 sets under its belt, Glencoe Gold easily secured the honours for the round.
