Golf: Junior talent crowned champions

GOLF SE JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS: Open boys nett winner Mount Gambier Golf Club’s Seth McRae, boys champion Parker Smith, Open girls gross winner Bekky Stutley and girls champion Susannah Bhutia.

WARM weather greeted competitors in the 2017 Golf SE Junior Championships at Millicent Golf Club on Sunday, with Mount Gambier Golf Club’s Parker Smith and Naracoorte’s Susannah Bhutia crowned champions for boys and girls.

After almost 10 years since the last standalone Golf SE junior championships, the Millicent course was presented in ideal condition and threw up its usual challenges to the players.

The weather was slightly warmer than we have been used to but everyone was still smiling as they returned to the clubhouse.

It has been almost 10 years since Golf SE held a standalone Junior Championship for SE Boys and Girls.

With the introduction of an Open division it is anticipated the event will grow as it becomes better known outside the region.

Players in the nine hole event were also treated to playing their round on Millicent’s new short course, a fully rated competition short course ideal for junior golfers.

Mount Gambier’s Parker was awarded the overall honours for the boys, also claiming the Open gross boys, ahead of Naracoorte’s Sam MacLeod.

The Open nett boys honours went to Mount Gambier’s Seth McRae, ahead of Blue Lake Golf Club’s Callum Harvey.

The Open gross girls winner was Royal Adelaide’s Bekky Stutley (Royal Adelaide GC), with Bhutia claiming the nett honours ahead of Naracoorte’s Arabella Bhutia.

The nine-hole winner was Kingston’s Charley Robinson.

On the day the Millicent Golf Club also conducted a come ‘n’ try golf session for a group of school children, with many showing interest in becoming a part of the Golf SE Futures Development Program.
