Barber Shield cricket postponed by rain

BARBER Shield cricket was thrown into disarray this week, with Saturday’s round called off due to the weather.

While the sun was shining, with little chance of rain, the days leading up to the weekend forced the hand of officials.

By Thursday night the turf wickets had taken too much rain, leaving just hard wickets to be utilised around the region.

The result saw minor grades played, with only one Twenty20 fixture completed at Glencoe.

The Barber Shield round will be completed this weekend as a one-day limited overs fixture.

North Sportsman’s d Glencoe

AFTER winning the toss in the Twenty20 fixture, Glencoe took the usual route of sending North Sportsman’s in to bat.

What resulted was a solid display of batting, highlighted by a half-century to opener Jake Schutz.

While Glencoe would have been buoyed by the early wicket of Matt McInerney with no runs on the board, the following 44-run partnership between Nick McInerney and Schutz made up for the less-than-ideal start.

McInerney had reached 21 with some smart cricket, rotating the strike and finding the boundary when the opportunity arose, allowing Schutz to do the same and push the run rate along nicely.

Michael Silvy then joined Schutz at the crease and his was an interesting knock, consisting of three boundaries, a two and a single for his 15 runs.

By then the Tigers were looking dangerous and that continued when Gavin Coon came to the crease, with a timely 39 to keep the runs flowing.

In the end North’s 179 was always a task ask for Glencoe, who struggled from the outset.

Once the half-century had been reached, Glencoe showed little resistance, surviving for just 13 overs and 86 runs in total.

Tim Young did most of the damage with the ball, knocking over three of the top order and adding another scalp later to his four-wicket haul.

Matt McInerney made up for his duck with two wickets, while other wickets were shared between Nick McInerney, Michael Silvy, Josh Fidler and Declan Kenny.
