Bay bowlers dominate

ON A ROLL: Port MacDonnell’s Chris Richards skippered his team to a good win against its Millicent opponents on Saturday in Round 5 of the Open Pennant competition.

Saturday Open Pennant

Division 1: Port MacDonnell 85/16 d Millicent 59/0

ON Saturday the Port MacDonnell Division 1 Open Pennant team hosted Millicent for a solid win at home.

Winning on all rinks, Chris Richards and his four secured a 25-19 win over Rod Gibbs’ team.

With only one shot the difference before the 16th end, the bay team then was able to score another 15 shots to Millicent’s eight.

Marcus Pietersma’s rink went up against Millicent’s Terry Barnes and his team, which saw Port MacDonnell hold the lead throughout the match.

With scores level on six shots at the 10th end, the hosts broke away for an eventual 28-18 scoreline.

The third rink was skippered by Heather Richards, with her side playing Ian Campbell’s team.

The visitors only managed to score on nine ends for the match and the home team claimed the win, 33-19.

Division 2: Kingston 79/13 d Port MacDonnell 74/3

PORT MacDonnell’s Division 2 side hosted Kingston for Round 5 of the Open Pennant competition, with the visitors taking out the points.
Kingston’s Billy Scott and his team played Don McCarthy’s four.

Scott’s side had the edge and led throughout the game, finishing with a solid 36-19 shot win.

Bart Lethlean’s four played Allen Emery, which saw Port MacDonnell down by eight at the break.

However, an improved second half saw the match conclude in a 23-all draw.

With the overall win still ripe for the picking, Reg Fisher’s team took on Colin Bobridge.

In a relatively even match, the 13-end mark saw scores at 15-13, but Port MacDonnell scored nine of the remaining ends to Kingston’s two.

This saw the home team claim a 32-20 win, but it was not quite enough to secure the overall honours.

Division 3: Mount Gambier 73/14 d Port MacDonnell 67/2

DIVISION 3 played at home against Mount Gambier, where Kevin Norman and George Kuhl and their teams did battle, with they Bay side claiming a 33-19 shot win.

However, this was the only win for the hosts on the day, with Tony Prugo’s four proving too strong for Lance Fisher.

Mount Gambier secured the win 31 shots to Port MacDonnell’s 13.

On the third rink, Kel Butler skippered against John Kentish, with the home side held scoreless until the eighth end.

The team did well to come back to within two shots at the end of the match, but Mount Gambier took the honours, 23-21.

Division 4 Blue: Frances 50/14 d Port MacDonnell 35/0

PORT MacDonell’s Division 4 Blue side made a disappointing trip to Frances on Saturday for Round 5 of the Open Pennant.

Losing on all rinks, the Bay team returned home empty handed, as Frances claimed the points for the round.

Friday Pennant

LAST week the Port MacDonnell Division 1 Friday Pennant team travelled to Penola where the host recorded a one-point victory.

Heather Richards’ team won by six shots, but a seven-shot loss on Judy Grosvenor’s rink saw the guests down at the end of the day.

The Division 2 side was at home on Friday, where it hosted Naracoorte RSL in cold and windy conditions.

Roma Henderson’s rink played Kathy Healy’s team, with the home side finding it tough to compete.

The in-form RSL team pulled away with several multiples in the second half to finish the match with a convincing 40-18 win.

On the other rink the Val Praetz and Linda Prentice led teams had a tight tussle with little separating the two.

With scores level on 18-all at the 22nd end, Port MacDonnell was able to find the upper hand stretch across the line for a 23-20 win.

The Division 3 side travelled to play Beachport Blue and claimed the win on both rinks for the day.

Heather Fox and Cheryl Doddridge skippered their teams to victory to see the final result, 40/14 to 31/0 in Port MacDonnell’s favour.

Mid Week Pennant

IN the midweek pennant competition, Port MacDonnell’s Blue team travelled to Naracoorte RSL, where the hosts claimed a solid win.

Winning both rinks for the day, Naracoorte finished with 64/4 to Port MacDonnell’s 28/0.

The Port MacDonnell Red side had better luck when it travelled to Penola, claiming the honours on both rinks for an overall win.

The final score saw the guests finish on 64/14 to Penola’s 32/0.

The Green team had a mixed result, as it won one rink against Mount Gambier Blue, but it was not enough to secure the points for the round.

Mount Gambier finished with 54/12 to Port MacDonnell’s 37/2.
