East Gambier 202 v South Gambier

AFTER a disappointing start to the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association Barber Shield season, which sees it on the bottom of the ladder, East Gambier managed a defendable total of 202 in Day 1 against South Gambier on Saturday.

It was a solid team effort that has the Bulldogs in good stead for Day 2 at Blue Lake Sports Park this weekend, with just two batsmen unable to reach double figures, one retiring due to injury.

Tom O’Connor and Darren Whitehorn opened the batting.

O’Connor contributed with a four and a single before he retired early due to injury.

As a result Ashley Dumigan padded up and both he and Whitehorn continued the momentum.

The two reached the 27th over before Whitehorn was dismissed off a Dylan Clough delivery for 27 runs.

Alex Hentschke could only add two to the total before he was disappointingly run out.

East was 2/59 and confident it could put together a solid score.

Skipper Dion Stratford joined Dumigan at the crease and the two put together an impressive 49-run partnership and surpassed the 100 mark.

Dumigan added a credible 40 runs, but was next to return to the sidelines, caught by Robbie Drenthen off a Bryce Whicker ball.

Peter Kerr then came out firing.

He and Stratford ran hard between the crease and quickly increased the team’s score to 130.

However, the skipper’s time with the bat was cut short off a Whicker delivery, finishing with 33 runs.

Simon Golebiowski and Kerr went to work and each found the boundary to increase the run-rate.

Golebiowski chipped in with three fours on his way to a score of 21 before he was run out.

East was on 5/168 with just 10 overs remaining and went for the big hit.

Patrick Glynn and Kerr made the most of every ball and increased the team’s total quickly.

Glynn ran hard to increase the score, but a swing and a miss meant he was sent walking for 15 runs.

Nathan Gore joined Kerr for the final over of the day, but was unable to make a run, while the latter finished the batting innings with 41 not out.

Best with the ball for South was Whicker who claimed two wickets.

East’s defendable score of 6/202 off 80 overs means its will come into Day 2 with confidence it can claim its first victory of the 2017-18 season.
