Jacques holds on

PICTURESQUE SETTING: The Southwest Games Field Archery competition was hosted by the Greater Hamilton Archers on Saturday at Cavendish in Victoria. Tim Roberts from GHA took this photo of competitors at one of the targets on the picturesque field course, where Blue Lake archer Ben Kilsby finished third in the open male compound bow division.

A DOUBLE round of indoor and a tilt at the Southwest Games Field Archery event entertained the Blue Lake Archers this week despite gale force winds scuttling Sunday’s outdoor round at Corriedale Park.

The indoor on Friday night was a double round of Australian indoor 25 metre and a closer result could not have been scripted.

Of the five archers present only three where competing.

Paul Freeman was adjusting to a new set up on his bow and settled for letting Garry Jacques and Ben Kilsby tussle for the winners honours.

A tie-break countback was required in the first round to sort the victor as both Jacques and Kilsby had scored 295 points.

After a check of the tally of 10-point arrows recorded by each archer, Kilsby was victorious.

Round 2 proved to be almost a carbon copy of the initial round.

Kilsby and Jacques were going point-for-point, but the momentum swung slightly to Jacques.

He added an extra point to his off-the-bow score compared to his first round.

Kilsby needed a perfect finish from his final six arrows to force another countback, but fell two points shy.

Jacques recorded a hard-fought and well-deserved two-point win.

On Saturday Kilsby attended the Southwest Games Field Archery contest hosted by the Greater Hamilton Archery club at Cavendish in Victoria.

The field archery course set up by GHA was in a picturesque bush area, complete with a flowing creek.

Field archery requires archers to walk around a marked course in the bush setting with multiple targets faces set at various distances.

Kilsby was credited with a third place in the Open Male Compound Bow division.
