NATIONAL EVENT: Motorkhana ace Michael Excel is pictured in his special class vehicle and will be among the field of over 65 cars set to compete in the Australian Motorkhana Championships this weekend.

THIS weekend will see Motorkhana action return to the Mount Gambier and District Saleyards, when the South East Automobile Club hosts the 2017 Australian Motorkhana Championships.

With a field of over 65 cars entered in the event, club president Kevin Raedel said it is an exciting opportunity to run the event.

“It is great to showcase both the club and beautiful city of Mount Gambier and surrounds, with visitors coming from Tasmania, Western Australia and everywhere in between,” Raedel said.

After hosting the South Australian Motorkhana Championships earlier this month, directors Jim Coombe and Peter Lock have been busy working on preparation for the event.

They aim to make this event the best in the country, as the calibre of the drivers entered are the best in this discipline of motorsport.

Motorkhana is all about a driver’s ability to manoeuvre their vehicle around a set course in the quickest time and this weekend will see no shortage of skill from both local and interstate talents.

It is the only style of racing in the country where reversing is a part of competition, with driver’s reverse flicks into finish boxes sure to be impressive to watch.

The competition will begin at 9am today, with spectators welcome.

With no admission fees, those interested can come and go as they please over the weekend, while catering is also provided.

Competitors range from 12-years-old to 60 plus, so spectators will have no shortage of variety as some of the best drivers in the country go head-to-head for the title.
