Border battle on BMX

STAGE SET: More than 160 BMX riders will influx into Mount Gambier when the Blue Lake BMX Club hosts the Australian Country Championships and South Australia versus Victoria competitions this weekend.

THE Blue Lake BMX Club track will come alive this weekend for the Australian Country Championships and South Australia versus Victoria showdown.

The country championships are held Saturday, while the prestigious cross-border battle will take place Sunday.

Over 160 riders have entered into both days of racing which promises to be a spectacle on the sport’s calendar.

Spectators will be drawn to their feet when the Pro Superclass riders battle it out on the track’s tough pro-straight.

About 30 local riders will compete over the weekend and will hope to snatch bragging rights from Victoria.

It has been almost 12 years since South Australia has won the title over its Victorian rivals and the club hopes its riders will be big contributors to the turnaround.

Club coach Sallyanne Morgan said while it had been years since South Australia claimed the honours, riders were positive.

“We are looking good this year,” she said.

“All Blue Lake riders will be fast on their home track.

“Everyone has been training hard and numbers have been fantastic, with even new riders braving the wintry nights.

“Also, a few older riders have come back out to prepare for the weekend ahead.”

Along with the older and more experienced riders, one club mini wheeler and 12 sprockets will also hit the track.

The riders and club are not the only two to benefit for the weekend’s racing, with the city economy to be boosted by the influx of visitors.

“It is a great opportunity to bring people from away into the town,” Morgan said.

“We have people come from all over South Australia and Victoria to compete in the weekend’s events.”

The track will open Friday from 5pm to 7pm for practice.

Racing starts at 3pm Saturday and 11am on Sunday.

The club will have a fully catered canteen available all three days.
