NARACOORTE CATTLE

Cattle number increased to 483 penned, quality ranged from plainer lots lacking condition showing the signs of the cold winter weather, to grain fed lots presented in excellent condition.

The usual field of buyers were present in a market with mixed results. Young steers gained 20c, while the heifer portion sold slightly cheaper.

Grown steers and heifers were limited and sold softer, heavy cows gained 10c/kg. Heavy bulls sold to 15c/kg dearer.

Young steers sold to the trade 400c to 430c while the heifer portion made from 380c to 414c/kg.

Feeders and restockers paid from 374c to 420c for the better types and from 240c to 384c/kg for the plainer lots.

Grown steers sold to the trade from 400c to 425c and feeders paid 360c to 414c, grown heifers sold to the trade from 350c to 390c and feeders sold from 220c to 390c/kg.

Heavy Cows made from 334c to 374c, medium weight cows sold from 278c to 326c for the better quality and plainer lots sold from 210c to 284c/kg.

Heavy bulls sold from 288c to 340c and light and plainer lots made 150c to 284c/kg.

NARACOORTE SHEEP AND LAMB

Numbers slipped slightly to 4,644 lambs and 1,734 sheep penned.

Quality was very mixed, ranging from plainer types lacking weight and shape to lambs off supplementary feed presenting to excellent condition. Not all the usual buyers were on the rail, and not all were operating in a market with mixed results.

Light lambs sold $10 to $15 softer to restockers and light trade lambs slipped $10/head, numbers and quality a factor.

Medium trade slipped $10, heavy trade gained the most interest and sold to $5 to $10 dearer.

Heavy export lambs were limited and sold to a top of $400 for one pen, selling firm to $10/head stronger.

Restockers and feeders weren’t as active paying $16 to $160 for the lighter weights and from $151 to $195/head for heavier weights.

Light trade lambs made to $172, Medium trade sold from $186 to $245 and heavy trade made from $226 to $300/head to average from 970c to 1055c/kg cwt.

Heavy export lambs 26 to 30kg sold from $264 to $365 and over 30kg sold to $400/head to average 995c to 1130c/kg cwt.

Merino ewes sold from $50 to $144 for light 1 and 2 scores and the heavier weights made from $110 to $200/head. Crossbred mutton sold from $80 to $163 for the lighter weights and from $150 to $215/head for the heavier weights.

Heavy mutton averaged from 640c to 720c/kg cwt.

MOUNT GAMBIER CATTLE

Wednesday, July 9

Agents penned 515 cattle, quality improved across the yarding with a good selection of well covered young cattle and heavy cows with less plainer lots lacking condition. All the usual buying group were on the rail in a dearer market across all weights and grades.

A limited offering of yearlings and vealers selling firm to 15c dearer in places, grown steers gained 15c to 30c and grown heifers sold to 20c/kg stronger and more in places.

Heavy cows sold to 25c better and heavy bulls gained 20c to 50c/kg with a better quality line up offered.

Young cattle sold to the trade to 412c and feeders and restockers paid to 370c for the better quality and from 242c to 320c for the plainer types. Grown steers sold from 380c to 440c for the better quality and plainer lots made from 310c to 385c/kg. Grown heifers sold from 380c to 420c to the trade and feeders paid from 150c to 330c/kg, mostly plainer types.

Heavy cows made from 290c to 390c, medium weights sold from 288c to 310c, the lighter weights made from 150c to 178c, while restockers paid from 260c to 300c/kg.

Heavy Bulls sold from 310c to 350c/kg and lighter and younger bulls sold to feeders from 276c to 306c/kg.
