Police catch up to border dodgers

A BRAZEN attempt to avoid a South Australian border checkpoint in the Limestone Coast has led to the dramatic arrest of two Adelaide men after police spiked their vehicles in Tailem Bend.

Both men were refused bail in Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday after engaging police in a pursuit earlier that morning at around 1.30am.

Police had signalled for the silver Holden Captiva and blue Holden Calais to stop as they approached the border checkpoint on the Dukes Highway at Wolseley, however both cars sped past police towards Bordertown.

Police followed the cars for a short distance but lost sight of them on the highway.

Back up patrols were called including the police helicopter PolAir.

The cars were briefly sighted at a petrol station at Keith before speeding off again toward Adelaide.

The cars were again sighted near Tailem Bend and police activated emergency lights in an attempt to stop the cars, but they refused and a short pursuit ensued.

Patrols deployed road spikes on the Princes Highway near the Tailem Bend Hospital with the Holden Captiva successfully spiked while the Holden Calais stopped at the scene.

The drivers and sole occupants of the cars, a 25-year old from Osborn and a 26-year-old from Brooklyn Park, were both charged with failing to comply with COVID-19 directions, failing to stop and with driving unlicenced.

They will appear again in court next month.
