Victorian man remains in custody ahead of June hearing

A VICTORIAN man with a lengthy criminal history interstate has been remanded in custody following a police pursuit on the outskirts of Mount Gambier.

Shaun Cooper, 25, appeared in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court via video-link last Wednesday to face several traffic matters relating to an incident on March 26.

Cooper was spotted driving a car at speed on the Princes Highway outside of Mount Gambier and police attempted to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle sped off and was later spotted at a Caltex service station.

The car was found to be stolen from a property in Victoria.

Following police enquiries, Cooper was arrested early last week for illegal use of a motor vehicle.

The prosecution opposed bail stating Cooper had an elaborate history in Victoria which included similar offences relating to the theft of motor vehicles.

Defence counsel initially made an application for simple bail, citing Cooper’s tough upbringing and young age.

He suggested the defendant be placed on bail with supervision to allow him to get treatment.

“I see this offending as a cry for help,” the defendant’s lawyer said.

Magistrate Jack Fahey indicated he would not be granting bail if he wanted that to be decided during the hearing.

Defence counsel withdrew the application and the matter was adjourned until June 16.
