A MAGISTRATE will consider releasing a dangerous driver on bail if the court can be satisfied a proposed home detention bail address is suitable.
Ashley Dean Sheedy, 27, is currently on remand after he was arrested on Tuesday last week and charged with drug trafficking and being involved in a number of police pursuits.
He appeared before via video-link in the Mount Gambier Magistrates Court yesterday after a home detention bail inquiry report was ordered last week.
The returned report was favourable and while the prosecution was not opposed to bail, they raised concerns about the willingness of the occupant to have Sheedy stay at the designated address.
The prosecution indicated they were unable to get in contact with the guarantor to confirm she was aware of the home detention obligations.
Magistrate Jack Fahey adjourned the defendant’s bail application until Friday to allow corrections to make further enquiries with the occupant.
Sheedy was arrested following an incident that occurred at around 5.30pm on May 4, when he was spotted driving a blue Holden Commodore sedan on Heath Street, Mount Gambier.
The court heard police attempted to stop the vehicle, however the defendant allegedly drove away at high speeds on the wrong side of the road in an attempt to flee officers.
Police saw the car drive away into a back street and overtake another car at around 90kph.
Prosecution said police did not follow the vehicle as a safety measure.
On May 5 at around 9.30am, police then attended the defendant’s home address – located on Chute Street – and found the vehicle involved, the defendant and a range of drug discoveries.
During a search of the vehicle, five bags of methamphetamine were discovered in the driver side’s foot well weighing well over 10 grams in total.
Scales were also discovered and a search of his house located hydroponic equipment.
Describing the offender as a person of interest, police converged on the property following information received from the public and made the arrest.
