A MILLICENT woman sustained scratching and bruising after she was recently attacked by roaming dogs, prompting Wattle Range Council to remind residents to lock up their animals.
At 9am on July 21, two dogs attacked the woman, with both animals – believed to be a husky mix and a kelpie mix – impounded by council.
Police alerted council senior general inspector Mark Clifton following the incident, with the dogs impounded and the woman treated in hospital.
“These dogs came from quite a way and from what I understand they were after the small dog that was walking with the woman,” Mr Clifton said.
“She lifted her dog to make sure that it was safe and so the dogs instead went for her.”
Once the woman has recovered, she will be called to identify the dogs, in which the owner will then be contacted.
The investigation will determine the most appropriate action to take.
Mr Clifton warned dog owners a first time roaming offence carries no fine, however a second or third offence will incur a $210 fine.
Dogs caught creating a nuisance by chasing or attacking an animal or person will be fined an additional $315.
Individuals attacked by dogs or cats should seek medical advice and contact council and police.
“When dogs roam together they can become more game and take more risks,” Mr Clifton said.
“Once a dog gets away with something, it will absolutely try it again.”
As part of responsible pet ownership, it is recommended dogs are secured on homes and properties and undergo behavioural training.
“People should be able to walk down the street of Millicent without fearing being attacked by a dog,” council development services director Steve Chapple said.
