Rock solid fracking guarantee needed

CALLS today for the State Government to enshrine the 10-year fracking moratorium into legislation appears to have merit given confusion about its long-term legality.

While it is understandable the fledgling Liberal Government is still finding its feet after claiming power, we need the fracking ban to go beyond just departmental policy.

We need it embodied into legislation to ensure a possible change in party leadership or government does not see this vital commitment abandoned without a parliamentary vote.

While views on conventional gas mining appear mixed across the region, the community is united on the need to ban hydraulic fracturing.

Fracking is the common term used for hydraulic fracturing – a controversial gas mining technique.

Premier Steven Marshall – who must be commended for visiting the region this week – now must meet swiftly with the Limestone Coast Protection Alliance to discuss this important issue.

While information may come to light about whether the moratorium needs to be incorporated into legislation, our community needs further details before people can be satisfied the ban is rock solid.
