A MOUNT Gambier High School student has received metropolitan attention for her poster highlighting women in science.

Year 11 student Anna Anbu has been announced as a winner of the Oliphant Science Awards in the Year 11 and 12 poster category.

She will now travel to Adelaide to attend the presentation ceremony and find out if she wins the overall prize.

Speaking with The Border Watch, Anna said she had always been interested in learning more about female scientists throughout history, labelling herself as a science buff.

“I have always felt like they have been underrepresented and their accomplishments have not always been displayed or talked about compared to male scientists” Anna said.

“I just wanted to display sciences from various different fields, there are mathematicians, biochemists, molecular biologists, chemists and so much more.”

She said she wanted to not only display the female scientists’ photo but also their names alongside a quote from Mary Curie which Anna resonated to.

“I am a science person, I have always leaned into science since I was young,” Anna said.

“I love discovering new things and learning about new things every lesson whereas with other subjects I find it is a bit repetitive.

“With science you learn something new every single lesson whereas with math you learn new things but it is coming from your base knowledge.”

Anna said when studying science it was completely new and fascinating with a main focus in chemistry and biology.

On her poster, Anna ensured she included new scientists as well as those from different countries and timelines.

Anna will attend the presentation on October 18 with other winners.
