Being a tourist in our own hometown

OUT AND ABOUT: Natasha Biggins spoke to Probus members about the Narracoorte Homestead. Picture: Supplied

It was a case of previously not having been there, not having done that, or at least in recent times for Naracoorte Men’s Probus Club members on a recent outing.

Touring one of the town’s lesser-known tourist attractions was a first for some members and their wives.

Narracoorte Homestead is a gem amongst us.

It was for some time known as Dartmoor Homestead but has now reverted to its original name.

Narracoorte Homestead is even older than when the original Narracoorte township’s spelling changed over to Naracoorte.

Apart from the homestead itself, there is Ormerod Cottage, Macintosh Hall and the surrounds to be seen.

In all, an authentic 1800s setting of the the oldest dwelling in Naracoorte.

Probus members visited the houses and grounds, and learned of its history from owner and tour guide Natasha Biggins.

Some Probus members were able to contribute further information for Ms Biggins as she continued to research the history of this grand old house and out-buildings.

So much to see and hear.

What can no longer be seen is the 22-stand woolshed that once existed and serviced Narracoorte station from over the creek, north-west of the homestead.

We all need to have a greater awareness and promote our local historical treasures.

Narracoorte Homestead is one of seven State Heritage listed buildings in the Naracoorte area.

There have been some great restorations.

Well done to Ms Biggins for her continued preservation of her historic buildings and grounds and keeping the past alive.
