A Shared Path Masterplan, detailing key actions, visions and goals in the development of active transport infrastructure within the City of Mount Gambier, has been adopted by council.

The plan would help guide council in creating a connected shared path network within the local government area in an effort to enhance the community.

Mayor Lynette Martin said the Rail Trail shared path had proven beneficial and this plan would help increase accessible active transport across the city.

“The plan has been designed to include footpaths and dedicated cycling paths that can be utilised by a variety of active transport users, pedestrians, cyclists, people with mobility restrictions, scooters,” she said.

“This infrastructure will make Mount Gambier a national leader when it comes to providing dedicated active transport infrastructure in a regional town.

With four key objectives, quality, connected and inclusive, safe, and supported, the plan splits goals into short, medium, long and ongoing categories.

Short term goals include adopting and endorsing functional cycling and pedestrian hierarchies, considering area wide speed reductions within the city, and endorsing primary routes.

Medium term goals include increasing footpath connectivity and creating a city wide loop for cycling and walking, while long term and ongoing goals include maintenance and promoting the use of shared paths.

The document was adopted at council’s April meeting after about a year of development and ongoing community consultation.
