NOMINATIONS are now open for the Barker Volunteer Awards.

National Volunteer Week highlights the importance of volunteering while also acknowledging and thanking those who give their time to volunteer for the benefit of others.

Held in May, the national weeklong event is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers.

Member for Barker Tony Pasin said as he spends time in communities across his electorate he was regularly reminded of the “immense contribution” volunteers make.

“From the local Mens Shed, sporting club or Country Fire Service, it is the unpaid work of volunteers that keeps these organisations running and serving the wider community,” he said.

“Volunteers really are the heart of communities across Barker and they deserve recognition for the time, skills and passion they exercise to help make our local communities great places to live, work and raise a family.

“The Barker Volunteer Awards are a small way in which I can acknowledge and thank the community members who go above and beyond by volunteering.”

Nominations close on May 10 with forms available at Mr Pasin’s office or on his website.

National Volunteer Week will be held from May 20 until May 26.
