Looking a decade ahead

Council continues to work in partnership with the community to shape a vision for our city – Mount Gambier 2035.

Council staff have been busy facilitating several roundtables with key stakeholders to discuss community feedback themes throughout the past few weeks.

The CEO and I hosted a roundtable with senior stakeholders which included representatives from State Government, service providers and surrounding local government agencies to explore the topic and issues regarding Mount Gambier’s population and potential for growth.

It was a very interesting discussion, and we heard how some of our statewide agencies, such as Housing SA, Department for Education and Department of Planning, Infrastructure and Transport, and services such as

Limestone Coast Local Health Network and TAFE SA consider Mount Gambier in their future planning.

We were also grateful to have Chief Economist from the Regional Australia Institute Dr. Kim Houghton join us to share his expertise and research regarding regional population growth and what this might mean for Mount Gambier.

Each agency and service provided us with insights on the role Mount Gambier plays in their thinking and planning and we were able to explore what it might look like if Mount Gambier doubled its rate of growth over the next decade – projecting our population to be around 34,500 by 2035.

These important and inspiring discussions will provide valuable input for the community panel to consider so that they can help shape Mount Gambier 2035.

This work is not only exciting, but important for Mount Gambier’s future as we explore with our community their vision for our city in 2035 and I encourage our residents to participate wherever possible.
