Positive news

District Council of Grant Mayor Kylie Boston.

This month the District Council of Grant and our community have had a lot to celebrate.

Our fishing industry and coastal communities received long awaited positive news that the proposed offshore windfarm zone will be situated in the Southern Ocean off Western Victoria only.

The announcement is a fantastic outcome confirming the Minister listened to our local voice and Council’s resolution for the zone to conclude at the Victorian and Southern

Australian border during the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s consultation in mid-2023.

We celebrated local youth during SA Youth Week with young people being the future of our community. We want to ensure they feel connected and safe which is why Council’s owned and operated Port MacDonnell Community Complex hosted a variety of free activities for those aged between 12 and 25 during the week encouraging connection and new friendships.

Our young people are already making a difference with 15-year-old Jett Lewis helping Council create Port MacDonnell’s new dirt mountain bike track.

Jett approached Council, with the support of Brevet Sergent John Carroll, propositioning an upgrade of the unused existing track.

Through further discussions between Jett and Council staff, a new track was deemed appropriate and supported within the 2023/2024 Budget.

We are proud to be working alongside our youth and I strongly encourage other young people to be creative to generate positive change.

Council is also striving to create positive change with our Strategic Management Plan review nearing completion of phase one engagement thanks to the efforts of our Citizens Jury.

We appreciate that the Citizens Jury has given up their personal time to help us understand our community’s priorities and vision for our district. Council is working hard to create a Draft Plan which reflects the needs of our community. Others will be able to have their say on the Draft Plan in the coming months through community consultation.

I look forward to further engaging with local residents and businesses, and visitors through our upcoming Strategic Management Plan engagement process.
