PUBLIC housing is set to be built in Mount Gambier/Berrin following promises from the state government.

A total of 167 public homes will be built across the state, and tenders worth between $50 million and $60 million have been released.

The homes will be a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes and will be built in several metropolitan areas and regional areas, including Mount Gambier/Berrin.

The state government committed an extra $232.7 million for public housing since the 2022 election, which will include 564 extra new homes and major upgrades to 350 vacant properties.

In addition to massive new investment, the government has cancelled the planned sale of 580 public housing properties.

Under the government’s additional investment, 60 homes have been completed and tenanted, 152 homes are under construction, and 71 homes are included in this current tender.

A further 283 homes will be completed or under construction over the next three months following awarded contracts.

154 homes linked to the new investment will be tendered and start construction over the coming year, with land already selected to ensure the homes are built as quickly as possible.

The SA Housing Authority is building more than 1,000 new homes over four years under its ongoing capital programs and the government’s additional investment.

South Australia secured another $135.8 million from the Commonwealth for social housing, which will see this number will grow further.

The state government is calling out for local builders for the public housing project, with construction tenders now open.

Minister for human services Nat Cook said the state government is making strong progress on their commitment to deliver the increase of public housing.

“This record release marks the next stage in our Government providing safe, secure housing for more South Australians who face barriers to long-term housing stability,” she said.

“I’m calling on local builders to help us complete the significant project pipeline we are rolling out, as we work with the Federal Government to secure future investment and further boost the state’s public housing supply.”

SA Housing Trust Board presiding member Mary Patetsos encouraged local builders to get involved with the improvements to the state.

“If you are a South Australian builder, now is the time to work with us to re-build public housing in this state,” she said.

“While we support your business with a pipeline of work, you are part of improving public housing for South Australians.”

Tenders for the project for this round close on March 20.
