SA Abalone banned from NSW

NO ABALONE IN NSW: THE New South Wales (NSW) Department of Primary Industries has implemented a ban on the importation of live abalone sourced from South Australia.

THE New South Wales (NSW) Department of Primary Industries has implemented a ban on the importation of live abalone sourced from South Australia.

It comes following the detection of the Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) near Port MacDonnell.

The restrictions were applied through an updated abalone biosecurity bill.

South Australia now joins Tasmanian and Victoria in the ban which is valid from February 24, 2024 for a further two years.

Any abalone imported to NSW must not have come in contact with wild caught Tasmanian, South Australian, Victorian centre or western zone abalone or have come in contact with South Australian or Victorian farmed abalone.

It also must not have come into contact with associated holding water or fittings or been processed in an abalone processor where high risk abalone are processed unless the processor is operating in accordance with specific mitigation.

Fittings used in connection with live abalone from the banned areas must not be moved to NSW unless they have been appropriately cleaned and disinfected.

Following the AVG outbreak in Portland within recent years, South Australia also implemented a prohibition of entry of unprocessed abalone.
